From environmental signals to daily decisions.
DAO connects the timing and character of light exposure with circadian science to guide more intentional daily routines.
Five stages, one loop.
Environment
Daylight, location and local time — where the sun is, and how long the day is, for any place and date.
PrototypedSensing
Personal light-exposure data from wearable hardware DAO is developing. Not available yet.
In developmentInterpretation
Rules that place exposure timing in its circadian context, based on the published research.
In developmentGuidance
Practical, testable suggestions about light and the timing of the day.
In developmentFeedback
Evaluating suggestions against observed personal outcomes, and adjusting them.
Planned
Prototyped — runs on this site today In development or planned
The loop is a design. Today only its first stage is implemented; nothing in it is automated end to end.
What the framework assumes.
01 /Timing matters
The effects of light depend partly on when exposure occurs.
02 /Individuals differ
People may respond differently to similar exposure conditions.
03 /Outcomes should be testable
Recommendations should identify an observable change and an appropriate evaluation window.
Illustrations are schematic. They show the idea, not measured data.
What exists, and what is next.
Available / Prototyped
- Solar geometry for any place and dateSunrise, sunset, solar noon and day length, checked against known astronomical invariants.
- The interactive InstrumentA web prototype for reading a place and a moment of the day.
- The Living AlmanacThe year in 24 solar terms rather than four seasons.
- Circadian Clock visualisationA design prototype; the times it shows are illustrative.
- Signup and onboardingWaitlist, a ten-question self-assessment, and Founding Access requests.
Under development
- Hardware light sensingWearable sensing of personal light exposure.
- Exposure calibrationRelating what a sensor reads to light at the eye.
- Personalised recommendation engineGuidance fitted to an individual rather than a population.
- Wearable integrationReading outcomes from devices people already wear.
- Outcome-feedback automationClosing the loop from suggestion to measured result.
- Local air and UV layerBuilt into the Instrument; not yet connected to a live data source.
Built on evidence. Designed to be tested.
Each stage rests on published circadian research, and each suggestion DAO makes is meant to name the change it expects and how long to wait before checking. The research tells us what to look for; it does not tell us DAO works. That has to be shown on DAO’s own measurements, which are still to come.
